STARSHIP DISCOVERY! Holiday Club 2009
‘Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s a...plastic bottle!’ Anyone on the top deck of the 12a at lunch time that windy Thursday in July must have wondered if East Dean had been taken over. About seventy adults and children gazed skyward looking at – what? The climax of an action-packed three mornings in the cricket pavilion saw rockets made by different families launched by Alex of Herstmonceux Science Centre to much oohing and aahing. You’d be surprised what heights a plastic bottle, a paper cone, a water-filled balloon and some propellant can achieve - in excess of 200 feet.
This and the barbecue that accompanied it was the climax of the Club. For the 30 children who attended – and the team of helpers under Commander Pauline and Engineer David – there had been a programme of exhausting team games, creative ingenuity (including yet more plastic bottles converted into breathing apparatus), decorated biscuits, quizzes, ear-splitting songs and delicious refreshments. Told through vivid renderings of simple Bible stories we learned that we, like Peter, should turn from one way of life towards another and, like both Peter and those first astronauts, step out trusting in God and training for the journey ahead. All this in a pavilion skilfully converted into the interior of Starship Discovery. As Renee Wickings, Honorary Spaceman, put it, “Sylvia and I ... both felt that we had really experienced a true replica and we hoped the Mums and Dads did too. At the final “Blast Off” our hopes and prayers were with them all on that day and we hoped they’d all have a safe landing with the great kind guidance of those who gave up their time pointing to Higher Ways. God bless them all.”
